When team members share their challenges with their manager, it is easy to slip into advisor and mentor mode where the manager simply solves the problem for the team member. The problem with this approach applied over and over again is that it stifles employee development, reduces autonomy, and eventually makes the individual feel micromanaged. When managers learn to shift to a coaching mode they learn how to ask relevant questions that help team members assess their situation, determine their own solutions, and take ownership and accountability for the outcome.
